Licentiate Programme in Systematic Theology

The Canonical Licentiate in Theology is another form of education, which is simultaneously an ecclesiastical second-cycle programme, leading to the conferral of the ecclesiastical academic degree of Licentiate. At the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow, the Canonical Licentiate is conducted in accordance with the requirements of canon law, as defined in the Apostolic Constitution Veritatis gaudium (art. 46, 49 §1, 50 §1, 74(b), 79 §2, 8) and the implementing regulations Ordinationes (art. 55, no. 2).

Admission Requirements

Applicants for the Canonical Licentiate in Theology must hold a Master’s degree in Catholic Theology or a document confirming possession of the ecclesiastical degree of Baccalaureate.

Admission criteria

Admission is based on the result of an entrance interview, during which the candidate is asked to present their research interests and previous academic achievements.

Only candidates who meet the admission requirements and have completed full registration in the IRK system will be eligible for the entrance interview.

Recruitment Schedule

• start of online candidate registration: 1 July 2026 (9:00 a.m.)
• end of online candidate registration: 28 September 2026 (12:00 p.m.)
• entrance interview: 29 September 2026
• announcement of results: 30 September 2026 (by 3:00 p.m.)
• submission of documents by admitted candidates : 5–10 October 2026 (8:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.)

Documents are submitted only by candidates qualified for admission, within the deadline specified in the recruitment schedule for document submission:

👉personally or by attorney-in-fact – at the secretariat responsible for the other form of education

List of Required Documents

👉 application form – downloaded from the IRK system (tab: Recruitment applications → Documents and next steps);

👉 diploma of completion of long-cycle Master’s studies or second-cycle studies in Theology, or a document confirming possession of the ecclesiastical degree – for copying into the records;

👉 written consent of the competent Ordinary, superior of a religious order, or superior of an apostolic life society – for members of the clergy only;

👉 recommendation letter from a parish priest – for lay persons only.

 The tuition fee is 17,200 PLN (4,300 PLN per semester)
