The Doctoral School at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow was established by the Rector of UPJPII, Fr. Prof. Wojciech Zyzak, PhD, by Ordinance No. 11/2019 of 20 May 2019.

 

The aim of education at the doctoral school is to create the best conditions for doctoral students for personal development (in particular on a moral and religious level), as well as for the search for truth, and to achieve such harmony between them that doctoral students, while pursuing their individual research topics, contribute to the overall mission of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow, which is to fulfil the universal mission of the Church expressed in the words of Christ: ‘Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations’ (Mt 28:19).

 

To meet this challenge, classes are held in modules that enable students not only to respond to the needs of today's evangelisation, but also to acquire the skills of conducting research and imparting knowledge, both in the theological sciences and in history, philosophy, social communication and media studies, canon law, art studies and family studies. The interdisciplinary nature of education also plays an important role, helping to open up to truth, goodness and beauty, as well as to engage in dialogue in which, as John Paul II pointed out in Częstochowa in 1979, ‘I must speak clearly about who I am so that I can talk to someone else who is different.’ An important element of education is also the possibility for doctoral students to choose a module of classes in a foreign language, taught by foreign professors. It emphasises the universality of science and of the Church, which, through the education of new scientists, wishes to influence contemporary society in the spirit of the Christian system of values.
